Vitamin C is an antioxidant naturally present in skin and widely used in skincare for pigmentation, dullness, uneven tone and visible signs of ageing.
But “Vitamin C” on a skincare label does not always mean the same ingredient.
Pure Vitamin C is called L-Ascorbic Acid or Ascorbic Acid. Skincare formulas can also use Vitamin C derivatives that have been modified to improve qualities such as stability or compatibility with different types of formulas.
On an ingredient list, you may see names including Ascorbic Acid, 3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid, Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate, Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate and Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate.
They all belong to the Vitamin C family, but they are not interchangeable. The form, concentration, formulation, packaging and other ingredients around Vitamin C all affect how a finished product performs.
Pigmentation happens when skin produces excess melanin in certain areas. This can be triggered by sun exposure, acne, inflammation, irritation, friction and other forms of skin stress.
Vitamin C can interfere with the process involved in melanin formation, including the activity of an enzyme called tyrosinase. Over time, this can help reduce the appearance of excess pigmentation and make uneven skin tone look more even.
This is why Vitamin C is commonly used for dark spots, post-acne marks, sun-related pigmentation and uneven skin tone.

Indian skin is not one single “skin type”. It includes a huge range of tones, undertones, oil levels and sensitivities.
What many Indian and melanin-rich skin tones do have in common is a greater tendency to develop post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation — the dark marks that can remain after a pimple, rash, ingrown hair, shaving, waxing, friction or irritation.
That means a small bout of inflammation may disappear quickly while the pigment it leaves behind stays visible for much longer.

Consistency beats aggression.
There is no single form of Vitamin C that is automatically “best” for everyone.
L-Ascorbic Acid. The pure, biologically active form of Vitamin C and the form with the longest history of research in topical skincare. It is a potent antioxidant but is naturally unstable and can oxidise when exposed to air, heat and light.
3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid. A modified Vitamin C derivative developed for greater formulation stability. It is used in skincare for antioxidant and brightening benefits and has demonstrated the ability to penetrate into skin in laboratory research.
Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate (SAP). A water-soluble Vitamin C derivative commonly used when greater formulation stability is required.
Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate (MAP). Another water-soluble Vitamin C derivative frequently found in brightening skincare formulas.
Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate / THD Ascorbate. An oil-soluble Vitamin C derivative used in lipid-based and oil-compatible formulas.
The important thing to remember: you cannot judge a Vitamin C product by the ingredient name or percentage alone.
The complete formulation matters.
There is no universal “best Vitamin C percentage”.
A higher number on the bottle does not automatically mean a better or more effective product.
Firstly, different forms of Vitamin C cannot be compared percentage for percentage. 10% L-Ascorbic Acid is not the same thing as 10% 3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid, MAP, SAP or THD Ascorbate.
Secondly, Vitamin C needs to remain stable and available within the finished formula. Concentration, pH, delivery system, packaging and supporting ingredients all matter.
And more is not always better for your skin. If a very strong formula causes persistent irritation, that irritation can be counterproductive — particularly when your skin is prone to post-inflammatory pigmentation.
Look at the formula, not just the number.
Absolutely. Vitamin C is not a face-only ingredient.
Body skin can develop pigmentation too — especially after ingrown hairs, shaving, waxing, body acne, friction and sun exposure.

One important exception: very dark skin on the neck or underarms that is also thick or velvety may have an underlying medical cause and should be assessed by a doctor rather than treated as ordinary cosmetic pigmentation.
Vitamin C plays particularly well with other actives when each ingredient has a different job.
Vitamin C + Niacinamide. Yes, they can be used together. The old idea that Vitamin C and niacinamide “cancel each other out” does not reflect modern cosmetic formulations. Vitamin C targets brightness and pigment while niacinamide supports even tone and the skin barrier.
Vitamin C + Ferulic Acid. Ferulic acid is another antioxidant and is frequently paired with Vitamin C in antioxidant skincare formulas.
Vitamin C + Hyaluronic Acid. A simple pairing. Vitamin C focuses on tone and antioxidant support while hyaluronic acid helps attract water and hydrate the skin.
Vitamin C + Peptides. Both can be incorporated into the same skincare routine. Peptides are generally used to support firmness and the appearance of skin structure while Vitamin C also plays a role in collagen synthesis.
Vitamin C + Glycolic or Lactic Acid. These ingredients can exist together in a professionally formulated product. When layering separate high-strength products yourself, however, using several potent actives at once may be too irritating for some skin.
Vitamin C + Retinoids. They can be part of the same overall routine. If your skin is sensitive or new to actives, an easy approach is Vitamin C in the morning and a retinoid at night rather than layering everything together.
Your skin does not win prizes for using the most actives at once.
Vitamin C can be used in the morning, at night or both, depending on the formula and how your skin responds.
Morning use is popular because Vitamin C provides antioxidant support while your skin is exposed to UV-generated free radicals and environmental stress.
A simple morning routine is:

Vitamin C does not replace sunscreen.
If you prefer to use Vitamin C at night, that is fine too.

Some forms of Vitamin C — especially pure L-Ascorbic Acid — are naturally prone to oxidation.
Air, light and heat can gradually break Vitamin C down. That is why packaging and storage matter.
But colour alone needs context. Different formulas can begin at different colours, so a pale yellow serum is not automatically oxidised.
What matters is a significant change from the product's original colour, particularly if it becomes progressively dark orange or brown or the smell and texture also change.
More stable Vitamin C derivatives are generally less prone to rapid oxidation than pure L-Ascorbic Acid.
