Indian skin has so much going for it – it ages slowly, it doesn’t get sunburnt and it’s not prone to skin cancer.

It does however, have a few set-backs such as hyperpigmentation, uneven skin tone, dullness and dark spots. But these annoying issues are not harmful and they can be undone.

So here’s what you need to do to really enjoy the wonderful skin you’re in.

Boofootel is skincare for melanin rich Indian skin tones

1. Use skincare created specifically for melanin-rich Indian skin tones.

Products for melanin-rich skin are formulated differently – with the right concentration of ingredients to slow down the production of excess melanin, target hyperpigmentation, soothe inflammation and brighten dull skin.

Tip: Look for products which have all these 3 kinds of ingredients – active, soothing and hydrating.
a. Active ingredients: Vitamin Cniacinamide, ferulic acid or glycolic acid.
b. Soothing ingredients: Rosewater, coconut water or marine algae.
c. Hydrating ingredients: Hyaluronic acid, glycerine.

2. Don't touch tiny injuries, pimples or mosquito bites – no matter how tempting!

If you pick a pimple or scratch a small mosquito bite, it could leave behind a dark spot after it has healed. This happens because your skin reacts to inflammation by producing even more melanin. There’s even a name for this condition – post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

So what to do?

The best thing you can do is not touch the inflammation. So don’t pick the pimple. Don’t scratch the mosquito bite. And don’t remove a scab from a healing injuring – no matter how tempting!
The more you mess with it now, the worse it'll look later.

Sun triggers pigmentation so use sunscreen

3. Protect your skin from the sun

Sunlight triggers pigmentation. So if you want clear, even-toned skin, you need to use a sunscreen every single day – even on cloudy or cool days.

Just one single day of excess sun exposure can undo months of treatment. That’s because UV rays just send the pigment melanin into overdrive, turning your dark spots even darker.

Tip: Always pick a sunscreen with more than 30 SPF. And make sure it is “broad spectrum”. That way, you will get the best protection.

4. Be Patient.

Hyperpigmentation takes time to fade – 4-6 weeks is usually what it takes to see an improvement – provided you’re using the right products.

So don’t use harsh products that will do more harm than good in the long run. Be kind to your skin and use products that are gentle but effective. And be consistent. That is the key!
