Hyperpigmentation can be a frustrating skin concern. If you’ve dealt with stubborn dark spots after a breakout, patches that make your skin tone look uneven, or marks from an old injury that seem to stick around for ages, you're not alone. Hyperpigmentation is a common issue, and while it’s harmless, it can be challenging to treat.
What causes hyperpigmentation in Indian skin tones?
Indian skin tones naturally produce more melanin, the pigment that gives your skin its colour.
Hyperpigmentation happens when your skin produces even more melanin as a response to an injury or inflammation – resulting in a patchy and uneven skin tone.
So you could get hyperpigmentation for any of these reasons:
- An injury such as a cut, scrape, insect bite or bruise
- A skin condition like pimples or a rash
- Sun exposure
- A reaction to products that don’t agree with your skin
- Hormones
What to do about it?
1. Don't make it angry.
Remember that hyperpigmentation happens when your skin is irritated or inflamed. So you need to avoid upsetting your skin at all costs.
2. Use ingredients that slow down the production of melanin.
To really even out your skin tone, you need to use melanin-inhibiting ingredients such as Vitamin C, ferulic acid, marine algae, niacinamide, glycolic acid.
Note: Ingredients like hydroquinone, arbutin and kojic acid are effective, but there are some concerns about safety and they can’t be used for long periods of time.
IMPORTANT: Be patient. It can take up to 6 weeks of regular use to see visible results - don’t give up too soon!
Now that you know the basics, let’s find the products that will actually work on your skin.
